In light of what has recently transpired in Charlottesville, VA; I believe we have to realize that it doesn’t come as a surprise. Such hate has been around all of my life and it’s not going anywhere…yet. The enlightenment is the simple fact that now, many white folks and the 10 black folks that forgot that they were black, can’t say that “we are making this stuff up.”
It’s amazing how over the years, many have attempted to silence this claim by referring to the ending of slavery being oh so long ago, surely racism doesn’t still exist. African Americans have grown tremendously in sports and among the elites of the society, surely none of the remnants of slavery is still floating around in the air. And wait, we believe you received back your reparations of 40 acres and mule with the election and reelection of Barack Obama. Surely, you blacks are making excuses. You should’ve simple resisted and followed the officer’s orders (I.e. Shut your mouth) and you could’ve went home to your families.
Then you blacks have the audacity to chant “Black Lives Matter.” What a racist thing to say! Well wait…did you truly understand the context of BLM or did you simple read the words? BLM wasn’t designed to be racist, it was designed to bring call to the fact that we are human so don’t forget that we matter too. Don’t forget that we have someone back home waiting on our arrival. Don’t forget that I have feelings underneath my black skin just as you. Don’t forget that I worry about my kids as you. Don’t forget that as a mother I nurse and cry over sick babies. Don’t forget as a father, it’s hard being a man with so much responsibilities on your shoulders yet I press on daily just like you. Don’t forget that there is a human behind the dark eyes, rough hair, big lips, and tall frame. Why must you be afraid of me? Have you not seen a tall stocky person before? Your brother is tall just like me. So, why does my long legs offend you? Is it simple because it’s draped an ebony hue?
You see, Charlottesville was bound to happen. Too many tall black folks walking around. Too many invading their space. Not wanted here. Need to stay in their own neighborhoods on the other side of the track. But the question of the day is: WHY! Why does my ebony hue offend you? Why? If I were queen for the day, this would be the question I’d demand an answer to. Why? Well let me ponder on the reasons I think this hate still exists and to be honest, I don’t think it has anything to do with skin color at all. But more so with insecurities needing a target.
It is referred to as Projection Psychology. This theory explains that basically when a person is not happy with themselves about something, instead of owning up to their inadequacies, they project these feelings onto others. Aletheia Luna writes in her article (Six examples of Projection Psychology we all commit), “What happens when you have a whole bunch of uncomfortable, embarrassing and annoying emotions that you don’t want to unconsciously deal with? According to famous psychologist Sigmund Freud these emotions are projected on to other people, so that other people become carriers of our own perceived flaws. Fortunately (or unfortunately) for us, this form of emotional displacement makes it much easier to live with ourselves … because everyone else is responsible for our misery – not us!”
We all know the old adage, “misery loves company.” This is exactly what I believe is going on. When people don’t like themselves they search for things to hate in others. It’s an outlet for those feelings of inadequacies. Men in general have control issues. Many believe the world evolves around them. White men in particular believe this land is theirs. They are the rulers! Go to the white supremacist sites and read around. The goal is to regain what they believe is their rightful place on earth. They believe they are the dominant race. Ok like who told them that? Look at any war in history and what was the underlying mission? To be in power. Millions of people killed because someone was miserable and decided they needed power so they grew some balls and started terrorizing everybody in sight. Pathetic!
So homie you wasn’t the most popular in school. You were the bully and/or were bullied. She didn’t want to date you. You didn’t make the team. They didn’t want you in their fraternity. You had mad pimples. You were too short. Your ears were big. You’ve always been a little plump. Your dad wasn’t in the home. Money didn’t grow in trees in your neighborhood. You ate ramen noodles for dinner most nights. You were a nobody in their book so you decide that one day you will be a somebody and so you devise a plan along with a bunch of other nobodies and you all agree on a person or group of people to bully! I can’t make this up.
Hurt people hurt people! Period. Want to see an end to bullying? Find out what is hurting them! Want to stop racism, find out the root cause of this hurt! Ask anybody whom falls into this category just how they got to that point. Like you want a real answer not their mantra. Get one alone and ask WHY. You would be amazed at their response. Many may not even know why. Many will refer to something that happened to their parents. “A negro ran off from the plantation and my granddaddy couldn’t plant enough that winter and they began to starve.” Really. Really. A black kid made the team instead of them. Soooo you hate all black boys for that? Sounds like you weren’t good enough so you projected that anger out onto a whole generation!
People are stuck in their feelings about so many things and they are hurting. Jeremiah 8:22 says “IS THERE NO BALM IN GILEAD? IS THERE NO PHYSICIAN THERE? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people?”
People are hurting. We can not continue to ignore the signs on the wall. Healing is needed all over this land. Want to stop racism? Heal the hurt. Protesting won’t solve it. Taking down a statue won’t erase it. Boycotting the NFL won’t do it. We have to treat the underlying issues! The hurt needs to be healed. Is there no doctor in the house!?!?
